What Are Reciprocating Pumps?

Reciprocating pumps are positive displacement pumps that use a piston, plunger, or diaphragm to move fluid through a cylindrical chamber. The reciprocating motion — back and forth — creates a vacuum that draws fluid into the chamber on the suction stroke and displaces it under high pressure on the discharge stroke.

Unlike centrifugal pumps, which rely on velocity and are limited by system resistance, reciprocating pumps deliver a constant, pulsating flow regardless of discharge pressure. This makes them the preferred choice for high-pressure, low-flow applications where accuracy and reliability are paramount.

These pumps are particularly effective for viscous fluids, abrasive slurries, and shear-sensitive media. They are the workhorses of the oil & gas, petrochemical, refinery, and drilling industries, operating where other pump technologies fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Petropedam reciprocating pumps, applications, and specifications.

A reciprocating pump is a positive displacement pump that uses a piston, plunger, or diaphragm to move fluid through a cylindrical chamber. The reciprocating motion creates a vacuum on the suction stroke and displaces fluid under high pressure on the discharge stroke.
API 674 is the American Petroleum Institute standard for reciprocating positive displacement pumps. It specifies design, materials, testing, and documentation requirements for pumps used in petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries.
Petropedam reciprocating pumps are available up to 800 bar, depending on the model and configuration. The F1600 and TH 1600 Triplex 300 models are rated for 500 bar, while standard plunger pumps can reach 800 bar.
These pumps handle a wide range of fluids including crude oil, petroleum products, water, drilling mud, slurries, chemicals, viscous materials, and two-phase fluids (gas + liquid). Specific materials selection depends on the fluid properties.
A piston pump uses a piston that travels inside a cylinder with sealing rings. A plunger pump uses a polished rod (plunger) that moves through a packing gland. Plunger pumps generally handle higher pressures and are preferred for abrasive or corrosive fluids.
Oil and gas, petrochemical, refineries, power generation, chemical plants, mining, water injection, pipeline operations, marine, and drilling operations.
A triplex pump has three plungers or pistons arranged in parallel. This design provides smoother flow, reduced pulsation, and higher efficiency compared to single or duplex configurations.
A steam-driven reciprocating pump uses steam as the power source instead of electricity. It is ideal for remote locations, hazardous areas, or applications where electricity is unavailable or unsafe.
Every pump undergoes hydrostatic testing, performance testing (flow, pressure, efficiency), and non-destructive testing (MPI, dye penetrant, UT) as required. Full test reports and certificates are provided.
Petropedam supplies genuine spare parts including plungers, pistons, packing, valves, seals, gaskets, bearings, and complete repair kits. Reverse engineering services are also available for older or obsolete equipment.
